Blankney Farm Update – 16 May 2022

We’re in the last spring period and so far, moisture levels from rain have been very low. April was just below 12mm and we have had less than an inch of rainfall so far in May – our winter cereal crops have suffered and yield potential now will be 10% below our 5 year average.

We have completed our spring drilling with the last fields of maize establishing this week.

Grass and Lucerne harvesting is now underway and irrigation has been ongoing for 3 weeks. Interestingly, we have now applied 50mm of irrigation water to grass, with only 31mm being supplied in addition by rain.

From a wildlife point of view – we have had some recent experience of geese roosting and landing in trees on some of our woodland – is this a normal occurrence?!
